A Scottish rugby star whose grandparents have been threatened with deportation after 40 years in the UK has told how the Home Office is tossing them out of the county like “trash”.

Damien Hoyland, 25, the Edinburgh rugby winger, who has won four caps for Scotland, said that his grandparents had been the driving force behind his success. “They’ve given us the drive to do as well as we can and be happy,” he said. “If I’ve been on the TV or the news, the amount of crying is ridiculous. The amount of support they’ve had for the family through the good and bad times — they’ve had such a big influence on me.”
