Dublin’s floods claim first victim

James Savage, 51, who lived in Richmond Road, one of the worst affected areas of the capital, was brought to the Mater hospital yesterday afternoon but later died.

It is thought that he boarded up his home to protect it from flood damage and moved into an upstairs bedroom. When a fire broke out yesterday he was unable to escape. Detectives are treating it as an accident.

The floods, caused by relentless rainfall, are the worst in Dublin since 1954, when the River Tolka last burst its banks.

The government was forced into an embarassing U-turn this weekend by restoring the budget for flood damage, which had been cut by 99% in the finance minister’s estimates. The damage caused is said to be in the
