Eighties chart topper contracts MRSA after brain haemorrhage

THE pop star Edwyn Collins has contracted the MRSA superbug while in hospital recovering from two brain haemorrhages.

The 45-year-old has been in hospital since February after suffering his first haemorrhage. But after after life-saving brain surgery following the second, Collins contracted the disease when it infected a surgical scar.

The former Orange Juice singer influenced a generation of pop musicians and enjoyed hits such as Rip It Up in 1983 and the 1995 smash A Girl Like You.

Last night he was receiving a course of powerful antibiotics at the Royal Free Hospital in North London, where he was said to be in a stable condition.
