One almighty generational leap removed from the sort of hardship that might have seriously impeded her sporting career, Eilish McColgan remains acutely empathetic to the issues faced by those born into more difficult circumstances. She is also determined to do something about it. And a determined McColgan is a fearsome prospect, indeed.
Away from the floodlit stadia of major championships and lucrative race meetings, the undoubted star turn of this year’s Commonwealth Games has been busy handing out bursaries and mentoring young athletes through her own not-for-profit organisation. When we all raved about McColgan showing plenty of “heart” in her dramatic 10,000 metres triumph in Birmingham, it seems we were more on-target than anyone could possibly have imagined.
