England and Scotland ‘must learn to talk’

How nations negotiate is vital to future of cross-Border politics, says Harvard expert on international relations

Political conflict between Scotland and England may never end and it is as important to find ways to handle disputes as it is to decide whether Scotland becomes independent or stays devolved, a Harvard University expert on international relations has said.

The warning has come from William Ury, director of Harvard’s Global Negotiation Initiative and a former US presidential adviser, who has spent 30 years studying conflicts, how to resolve them and, more importantly in his view, how to prevent them becoming destructive.

He now teaches courses in which students learn that the same basic principles of negotiation apply whether the problem is between a married couple, pupils in a classroom, or countries on the brink of war.
