England women set sights on Euro triumph

HAD it been scored in a major men’s tournament, the football world would be talking about it still. Straight from a kick-off, Eni Aluko wove the length of Finland’s half and smacked a finish past their goalkeeper.

Teammates have been calling her “Messi”. Aluko, the top scorer at Euro 2009, is unrecognisable from the timid striker who looked so miserable at the 2007 Women’s World Cup in China.

Aluko’s wonder goal was her second of the game and the decisive one in the 3-2 victory over the host nation that propelled England into the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time in a generation.

Their opponents will be Holland, over whom they have a winning record.
