Exclusion of atheists is illogical

A young boy of our acquaintance is gifted, musical and occupies the upper echelons of the intelligence quotient. Unless something goes badly wrong, one day he is likely to be helping to run the country or, if not that, will be treating the medical ailments, writing books or handling the legal affairs for those who do. It will possibly assist him that, thanks to the Scout movement, he has learnt far younger than he should how to lie.

To have remained true to his atheism would have rendered him unable to swear the oath of Scouting, and thus would have cost him the rewards of the hobby he loves.

It cannot possibly have served the aims of Scouting that boys such as this should, so
