FA appoints manager for a match

The Football Association tonight appointed Leicester boss Peter Taylor as a short-term England football manager for next month’s friendly against Italy, with Manchester United assistant manager Steve McClaren acting as his right-hand man.

Taylor and McClaren will take charge of the team for the friendly in Turin on November 15 as the FA steps up its search for a long-term successor to Kevin Keegan.

Adam Crozier, the chief executive of the Football Association, said the men were “two of the best young coaches in England” and would play a part in the squad when the full-time manager was appointed.

He said a short-list of candidates had been drawn up for the permanent manager’s position and those on it would be contacted in the next week.
