For the security guard standing on Wembley Way, the juxtaposition couldn’t be starker. “I stood here for the final of the men’s Euros in 2021,” he said. “It was chaos — total disorder, people fighting, people bleeding, people unable to walk because they had drunk so much. Today, for the women’s game, it’s like a party.”

As the Wembley Arch sparkled in the sunshine yesterday, more than 70,000 Chelsea and Manchester United fans made their way to the stadium for the first sell-out Women’s FA Cup Final at the national ground.

Families, youth teams and converts to the women’s game were among those who descended on Wembley more than three hours before kick-off, lapping up the atmosphere.
