Fabio Capello unhappy at late news of injuries

Fabio Capello, the England manager, has reminded his squad of the need for better communication with the FA’s medical staff after being disappointed to learn that Michael Carrick had been playing with a broken toe for the final stages of the campaign with Manchester United.

Carrick was one of several absentees from the England squad that made a seven-hour flight to Almaty yesterday, with David James, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jagielka, Stewart Downing and Aaron Lennon also missing. Only James and Ferdinand were likely to be in the starting line-up for the World Cup qualifying match away to Kazakhstan on Saturday, but Capello believes that Carrick and United should have brought his injury to the attention of the FA sooner.
