Fellowship of the left

Driving on the left

Sir, Japan is thankfully a non-Commonwealth member of the “fellowship of left-hand-lane drivers” (leading article, Sept 2, and letter, Sept 4). It makes driving there an added pleasure.

Other members are Indonesia, Nepal, Mozambique, Suriname and Thailand — also not former British colonies. Together they add some 300 million to that fellowship, twice the population of our Japanese friends.

With Mozambique, I say “not British ex-colonial” because it has, of course, subsequently joined the Commonwealth. Maybe driving on the left was part of the attraction.
