Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Channel 4, 1.15pm

The author Truman Capote originally wanted Marilyn Monroe to play Holly Golightly in the film adaptation of his gossipy Manhattan memoir. But the role went to Audrey Hepburn after Monroe dropped out, warned by her drama coach Lee Strasberg that playing a high-class call girl could taint her screen image. Directed by future Pink Panther series creator Blake Edwards, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is more sweet than sour, downplaying some of the book’s more risqu? sexual elements. Co-starring a dapper George Peppard as Holly’s neighbour and confidant, this feelgood matinee classic won Oscars for Henry Mancini’s score and theme song, Moon River. (115min)
