First day of Ryan Giggs assault trial told of player’s ‘sinister side’

A Monday morning in August should have been an opportunity for Ryan Giggs to take some time for reflection and to consider what he had seen of certain players over the opening weekend of a new Premier League season in the context of this year’s World Cup.

But Giggs was forced to resign as the manager of Wales in June because he was due to appear here, at a crown court in Manchester, as the defendant in a trial. A seat on the bench has been replaced, for the next two weeks and perhaps longer, by a seat in the dock.
