Forestry Commission project to count Britain’s trees

Edinburgh A survey to count Britain’s trees is under way as part of a two-year project to assess the health and spread of the nation’s woodland. The exercise is intended to provide details on the number of trees, the type of habitat they provide for animals and how much carbon they absorb. Investigators also hope to be able to discover how many dead trees there are, a possible indicator of climate change. Mark Lawrence, of the Forestry Commission, said: “We want to ensure the woods are not only there but are in good condition and are sustainably maintained.”
