Frightened Britons lose hope of tackling crime

ALARM about the levels of crime and violence is higher among British people than in five other major industrial countries, including the United States, according to a study to be published next week.

British people have the lowest level of confidence in the ability of the Government to get a grip on criminal behaviour, according to the poll carried out by Ipsos MORI.

The findings of the poll will come as a blow to Tony Blair. Other research has shown that confidence in dealing with crime is a key factor in the public’s judgment on the Government’s overall competence.
