Battling Nicola Adams became the first female boxer to win an Olympic gold medal today as British women got Team GB back into its winning ways.

The 29-year-old from Leeds was utterly dominant as she beat China’s Ren Cancan by 16 points to seven in the flyweight final, staying cool and in command despite deafening cheers and chants from the crowd at the ExCeL Centre in London’s Docklands.

The scene could barely have been more different from that 45 minutes earlier just across the Thames in Greenwich Park, where Charlotte Dujardin won Britain’s first ever individual gold in the dressage to add to the team gold she helped win on Tuesday.
