Government ‘to support bid’ for 2018 World Cup

RICHARD CABORN, the Minister for Sport, said yesterday that the Government will back England’s bid to stage the 2018 World Cup finals. Whitehall departments will be publishing a feasibility study in a month’s time into the possibility of hosting the tournament and this is expected to give widespread backing to the attempt to bring it back for the first time since 1966.

Caborn and Lennart Johansson, the president of Uefa, met Gordon Brown in Downing Street on Wednesday to discuss England’s chances of staging the World Cup after failing in a bid to host the 2006 tournament.

Caborn said yesterday that the Chancellor of the Exchequer — and heir apparent as Prime Minister — was “very, very keen” on the idea. Asked on BBC Radio
