There is only one word for Ed Miliband’s giant stone tablet carved with his six election pledges and that is, surely, monumental. OK, you may have another word in mind but it takes a certain kind of genius to come up with such a notion. As I watched Ed standing by his 8ft 6in limestone pledge card in a car park in Hastings, I just knew that Moses would be jealous. “These six pledges are carved in stone,” said Ed, in a suit and not a toga, wind whipping around and his head not quite reaching pledge No 4 (“controls on immigration”).
