Hiding behind the edu babble

How ill at ease with education the government’s ministries sound

Sir, We should not be too surprised by the conclusion of the Nuffield review of education that the discourse of education policy is all too often characterised by a forbiddingly opaque edu-babble (report, June 9). After all, there is not even a government ministry that has the word “education” in its name.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families seems to be telling us through its rather twee moniker that primary and secondary education policy can be articulated only if socially contextualised, while higher education is camouflaged by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. How ill at ease with education these two ministries sound.
