IT IS the 40th anniversary of Cathy Come Home, the landmark BBC television play about a young mother who ended up on the streets with her children taken into care.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the homelessness charity Shelter, and its fight for everyone’s right to have a home. You can make a one-off donation or give regularly at www.shelter.org.uk. The charity Crisis is looking for 5,000 volunteers to run the seven homeless centres over Christmas. Information on this or buying a luxury Crisis Christmas pudding can be found at www.crisis.org.uk.

St Mungo’s, London’s largest charity for the homeless, has a Christmas catalogue of gifts at www.mungos.org. You can buy someone who is homeless a phone call to their family and friends
