HBO Max has said that dimmed lighting in the latest episode of its Game of Thrones spin-off was an “intentional creative decision” despite viewers complaining that the show was “unwatchable”.

The seventh episode of House of the Dragon, a prequel series focusing on the Targaryen dynasty, featured a number of scenes set at night. Fans took to social media to complain about the poor lighting, with some joking that they were better off turning their screen off and listening to the dialogue.

One viewer said it was “amazing” that HBO failed to produce better lighting for dark scenes with the show’s production budget of nearly $200 million, and added that viewers “might as well drive with sunglasses on at night”.
