A Chinese challenger has overtaken Apple to become the second biggest smartphone maker in the world and has set its sights on becoming the No 1 next year.

Huawei shipped more than 95 million phones in the six months of this year, an increase of more than 30 per cent compared with the same period last year.

That has helped to lift Huawei above Apple to become the second largest smartphone manufacturer with a global market share of 15.8 per cent, according to International Data Corporation, the market analyst. Samsung, of South Korea, is the biggest producer, with a 20 per cent share of the market.
