THE MAN given the first beating-heart transplant in Britain spoke last night of his joy at being given a new lease of life.

Michael Burt, 58, had only six months to live when the call came from Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire a month ago.

He was the first patient in the UK to be given a heart transplant using a new technique that keeps the heart beating while it is transported from donor to recipient.

The technique, developed by a US company and under trial in the UK and Germany, could transform transplant surgery by making more organs available – and in much better condition – than in the past.
