Illegal file sharing

Strengthened measures to tackle illegal file-sharing welcomed by unions

Sir, On behalf of the thousands of people employed by the creative industries in the UK, we support the strengthened measures being proposed by the Government to tackle illegal file-sharing (letters, Sept 1 and 3).

As many as 800,000 people work in the creative sector, and with piracy depriving businesses of up to 20 per cent of their revenues every year, many workers will be at serious risk if action is not taken. We believe the Government’s proposals have a good chance of making a difference, so we welcome these measures and hope they will allow creative businesses to safeguard current jobs and invest in future employment opportunities for our workforce.
