Jeremy Corbyn suggested yesterday that there should be a standardised minimum wage across the EU linked to the cost of living.

The Labour leader said that an EU-wide indexed minimum income would offer British workers a “level playing field” and slow immigration.

He set out a “strong socialist case” for staying in the bloc but warned that migration from the EU had reduced the pay of British workers because employers, he said, exploit the cheaper labour. Rejecting claims that “too many” migrants had come to Britain, he said: “The issue has to be of wages and regulations. It is employers that try to undercut industry-wide agreements, in the construction industry and others, that are the problem.”
