The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will explore the legality of a blanket ban on all Russian athletes at the Rio Games after revelations of a state-run doping system.

A series of punishments have already been announced, however, including a ban on Russian officials being given accreditation for this year’s Olympics and a proposal to name and shame individual drug cheats.

Before a total ban on Russia at the Olympics can be officially proposed the IOC will wait to learn the outcome this Thursday of a Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) hearing into the case of 68 Russian track and field athletes who have appealed against their IAAF ban from Rio.
