Shots were fired at an Iranian embassy car in the Yemen capital Sanaa leaving a diplomat dead.

A diplomat, named as Ali Asghar Assadi, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after the attack but has died from his wounds.

Gunmen attacked a car belonging to the Iranian embassy near the ambassador’s residence, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham has confirmed.

“We are seriously following up the dimensions of this terrorist action with the relevant Yemeni government officials,” Afkham said.

The incident is thought to be a botched kidnapping, gunmen fled the scene and there has been no claim of responsibility.
