A late flurry of four wickets with the second new ball, including a burst of three in 14 balls by James Anderson, dragged England back into contention on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies after Joe Root controversially omitted Stuart Broad from his starting line-up.

Anderson, 36, England’s leading Test wicket-taker, had bowled 16 tight but unsuccessful overs before he struck by having Shai Hope caught behind off an inside edge. It was his first wicket in 341 deliveries, since the initial over of Sri Lanka’s first innings in the opening Test in Galle in November.
