Learning goals for toddlers may go as ‘nappy curriculum’ is abandoned

The controversial “nappy curriculum” for children under 5 could be scrapped two years after it became law.

Ministers believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), requiring toddlers to meet writing targets and use some electronic equipment, has become too bound up in red tape and want to see nursery education do more to help those from poor backgrounds.

A review to be announced today will examine the impact of 69 “learning goals”, which require children in all state and private pre-schools to write in short, punctuated sentences by the time they are 5 and to create “lists, stories and instructions”.
