Leslie Paine contributed to the training of psychiatrists, the clinical care of patients and the pursuit of psychiatric research in his role as House Governor of the Joint Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospital.

Part of his remit was to promote interaction between the two hospitals, which were on two sites: Beckenham and Denmark Hill, both in South London. He appointed the hospitals’ first full-time archivist in 1967 and arranged for an archives building to be built in the grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital. Paine encouraged the research endeavours of the Institute of Psychiatry, its academic departments being accommodated within the hospital buildings.

For 22 years he ensured that the reputation of the hospitals’ training programme was upheld. The consultants were asked to be generous
