Suggestions by Thames Water that its plans to build a £2.2 billion sewer provide the only solution to London's sewage problems are wide of the mark.

In fact, construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel, or super-sewer, spells bad news for Londoners. Not only would this 20-mile tunnel destroy several parks, it will also hit Thames Water customers where it hurts most - in the pocket.

This is the wrong solution. Even the experts are not convinced about the viability of the scheme.

Thames Water should instead concentrate on finding an answer to the basement-flooding problems that are constantly blighting the lives of residents of riverside boroughs such as Hammersmith & Fulham.
