Matthews may get £600,000

HOLTON Up to £600,000 compensation could be paid to Bernard Matthews for turkeys slaughtered as a result of the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu at a farm in Suffolk.

If compensation is awarded, the 152,000 male turkeys aged between 51 and 65 days would be valued at between £3.31 and £4.42 each.

Officials have removed a 3km (2 mile) protection zone around the farm and poultry owners will face the same restrictions as those living in the wider 10km surveillance zone.
