THE energy giant Eon last week agreed to refund £1.4m to 94,000 customers who were overcharged after price increases or were incorrectly charged exit fees for switching to avoid the rises. Householders are overcharged £6bn a year by energy suppliers, according to Uswitch, the comparison site.

The refund was ordered by Ofgem, the regulator. It said: “Ofgem has put in place rules to protect consumers so they can get a fair warning if their supplier puts up prices and have time to shop around for a better deal. Eon has accepted it failed to meet these requirements.”
