A man who cut off his ex-girlfriend’s nose with a steak knife after she began a new relationship had his prison sentence increased to eight years yesterday.
Maria Vella, 33, needed 200 stitches to re-attach her nose after Dale Hathaway, 27, attacked her in the lobby of a luxury hotel. Police officers said her injuries, which have left her scarred for life, were the most horrific they had seen.
Hathaway admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and was jailed for six years at Cardiff Crown Court in October. However, judges at the Court of Appeal agreed with the prosecution yesterday that the sentence was unduly lenient and increased it by two years.
