More women over 40 giving birth

Births to teenage mothers fell last year, while the number of older women having babies continued to rise.

England’s baby boom has led to a 6 per cent rise in hospital births over five years, with a quarter of children delivered by Caesarean section.

In London, women over 40 are giving birth at twice the rate of teenagers, the latest figures show, accounting for one in 20 of all births in the capital.

Just over 33,600 babies were born to women aged 13 to 19 in 2011-12, a 22 per cent fall in five years, figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre show.

The Caesarean rate has risen to 25 per cent from 24.2 per cent.
