Pope Francis is returning from the Greek island of Lesbos with 12 Syrian Muslim refugees, including six children, who will live at the Vatican with him.

The pontiff courted controversy with the trip, which lasted little more than five hours and saw him visit a centre that houses hundreds of migrants and refugees who find themselves stuck on the island and facing deportation to Turkey.

Some people said his arrival was political meddling and graffiti was sprayed around the island before his arrival, with messages such as “Papa don’t preach”, although this was removed before his plane touched down.
