I was moved to tears by your article “How dementia stole my rugby star husband Fergus Slattery” (Sport, last week). But then, tears are a regular feature of my life. Like Margot Slattery, I have lost my husband to dementia in the past four years. Now 75, he was a rugby player until his early thirties, including a stint at Trinity College Dublin. Fergus Slattery was a player he much admired.
David Walsh’s article conveyed the tragic impact on loved ones with sensitivity and power. It is impossible for those who do not live it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to understand; but it helps to know that others are being made aware, which may bring greater understanding and support
