THE 19th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival wrapped up this week, but for those already itching for the 20th, consolation comes with The Bent Lens, an encyclopaedia of what some critics call “queer cinema”.

In fact, this new edition of The Bent Lens takes account of a further development: “new queer cinema”, whose advent was noted by an ever-alert critical fraternity in 1992.

The encyclopaedia’s remit is broad, covering both films where sexuality is the central theme and those where it is more tangential.

American Beauty is there for its male kiss — although the bits I was awake for suggested that its main
