Newmarket ‘fuelled by cocaine’

But racing world angrily denies claims that drugs, gambling and alcohol are a problem

The town of Newmarket and the racing industry hit back last night at accusations that the headquarters of Flat racing in Britain is riddled with a cocaine problem and does not do enough to support young people in the sport to prevent them going off the rails.

The report was published yesterday in the Racing Post, the racing industry’s bible, and was written by Chris Humpleby, an assistant trainer at Roger Varian’s stable. He wrote of a “murky undercurrent of vice that is unmistakable to all of us who live here.”
