Parliament’s financial watchdog has been urged to investigate West Ham United’s agreement for the Olympic Stadium after the full terms of the deal were made public yesterday and revealed that a whole host of costs, including policing and stewarding at matches, will not be borne by the club.
Those costs, added to those of maintaining the venue plus heating and lighting, will be taken on by the stadium operator and are likely to exceed West Ham’s £2.5 million annual rent.
The agreement has been described as “presposterously generous” to West Ham, but it does make clear that the owners may have to pay millions of pounds to the public purse if they sell the club.
