A teacher accused Ofsted of “murder” over the death of a head teacher as a union voted in favour of abolishing the watchdog.

At its annual conference in Glasgow, the NASUWT became the second big teaching union to call for an immediate freeze on inspections to allow full mental health assessments to be carried out on teachers and school leaders.

The motion calls for the watchdog to be replaced with a “supportive framework”. It follows the death of Ruth Perry, who took her life when Caversham Primary School in Reading was downgraded from outstanding to inadequate, the lowest possible rating.

Hank Roberts, a delegate from Brent, northwest London, told the conference that he believed the watchdog’s inspection regime was akin to bullying.
