Online MPs’ expenses reveal grubby details of weird household claims

If you wish to look at details of your MP’s expenses online, you will be greeted by an announcement on the parliament.uk website: more than a million documents have been scanned in a “major publishing operation”. Perhaps it is intended to make us feel grateful that they went to so much trouble.

It is true they have worked hard. All that blacking out must have taken considerable effort. It is as if the Iranian censor had been given a copy of Playboy.

So be warned if you haven’t logged on for a browse yet. It is heavy going. I spent a day trawling the site and ended up overwhelmed by the volume of documents and the grubbiness of what they reveal.
