Oxford University has the lowest proportion of state school pupils of any mainstream university, according to new figures which show that social mobility has stalled.

Several music and dance conservatoires performed even worse than Oxford, the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa) data revealed.

Overall, 90 per cent of those starting full-time degree courses for the first time in autumn 2018 came from state schools, only 0.1 percentage points higher than in 2017. This proportion was lowest at universities in the southeast and London, and highest in Wales and Northern Ireland.

When universities were ranked by how many students attend from “low-participation” neighbourhoods, which normally send few children to university, the weakest performer was Queen Mary University of London, with King’s College London, University College
