Paul Lambert, the Aston Villa manager, insisted that he bears no hard feelings towards Ashley Young for his role in Gabriel Agbonlahor’s sending-off.

The Scot and Brad Guzan confirmed after the game that Young approached the American goalkeeper in the tunnel to admit that, if anything, he was at fault for the incident that resulted in Lee Mason showing the Villa striker the first red card of his career for “excessive force”.

Lambert will seek to speak with Mike Riley, the chief executive of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the referees’ governing body, to express his dissatisfaction at Mason’s decision — Villa’s third red card in recent weeks — but he is adamant that he does not apportion any blame to Young.
