Players show united front as Fabrice Muamba fights for life

The draw for the semi-finals of the FA Cup created the potential for two derby matches yesterday as the competition continued to be overshadowed by fears for the wellbeing of Fabrice Muamba.

The Bolton Wanderers midfield player was in a critical condition at the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green last night, 24 hours after suffering a cardiac arrest during the sixth-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

The plight of Muamba, 23, cast a shadow over yesterday’s sixth-round ties in which Chelsea, inspired by Fernando Torres, beat Leicester City 5-2 to set up a potential clash with either Tottenham or Bolton, while Liverpool accounted for Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield and will face the winners of the replay between Sunderland and Everton
