There was plenty of style in President Obama’s celebration of the special relationship but is there any substance? The fact that America and Britain disagree on so little leads many to view such occasions as just so much fanfare devoid of any real, hard negotiations.

Critics chalk this up to Britain’s poodle-ish behaviour towards Washington, doing its bidding and following it willingly into questionable wars without proper hesitation.

In opposition, David Cameron vowed not to do as Tony Blair had done with President Bush and to act with America only when to do so was in Britain’s interest. In government, and with Mr Obama in the White House, he seems to have found it usually is.
