Yesterday, at Bute House in Edinburgh, the odds seemed stacked rather more in favour of Mary’s successor, Nicola “Queen Nic” Sturgeon, the first minister. Protocol you’d think, would demand the flags of each great nation would fly on the occasion of her first meeting with Theresa May, but only two Saltires fluttered under Edinburgh’s leaky summer sky.
