Radcliffe return put in shade by young pretender

THERE had been a strong suggestion circulating that Paula Radcliffe would attempt to break her world best over 10 kilometres, but her return yesterday was a little upstaged by Keith Gerrard, the 19-year-old winner who had never competed over the distance. Radcliffe came third in the Nike RunLondon 10km, finishing in 32min 19sec. Her best is 30min 21sec.

It was an opportunity for Radcliffe to measure her fitness, on her first outing since winning the marathon at the World Championships in Helsinki two months ago. She never led the event, which was dominated by Gerrard, the National Junior Cross Country Champion, who runs for Manx Harriers. He broke the British youth record, finishing in 31min 8sec.
