Rainfall can make impact at Newmarket

The July meeting at Newmarket opens in style today, with the Mark Johnston-trained Rainfall fancied to land a terrific renewal of the group one Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes (3.10).

Unraced as a juvenile, she was impressive when winning on her debut at Thirsk in May before finding a drop to six furlongs too sharp when second to Bewitched at Haydock Park. She stepped up markedly on that when winning the Jersey Stakes back over seven furlongs at Royal Ascot last month, fending off the useful Red Jazz despite still looking in need of the experience.

With plenty of stamina in her pedigree, there is every chance that Rainfall will improve again now that she steps up to a mile for the first time and she
