RBS set to reveal profits of £8bn

The company, which opens its new world headquarters next to Edinburgh airport later this year, makes about a third of its money overseas and is expected to give an update on how its latest acquisition, the American bank Charter One, is being consolidated.

The Royal has not ruled out further growth in America, but its next target may be in Europe or the Far East and may be more than a year away.

The bank is also unlikely to confirm reports that it has appointed headhunters to replace Sir George Mathewson, its chairman, who is 65 this year. It is more likely that Mathewson will tell the annual meeting in April that he intends to go within the next 18 months.
